Who is a Kate Woods commission best suited for?

This work is created for couples and families who see art as part of how they live, not just something they hang. Most clients are experience driven and design literate; they care deeply about atmosphere, emotional truth, and legacy. They are not simply looking to document a wedding, but to create an heirloom that will still feel like them fifty years from now.

How many commissions do you accept each year?

Only a small number, typically four to six, for weddings and private celebrations. Keeping the studio intentionally small allows each commission the time, focus, and sensitivity it deserves, from first conversation and home visit to the final, framed piece.

What makes a live painting different from photography and film?

Photography and film are invaluable; they hold the full record of the day. A painting serves a different role. It distills the feeling of the celebration into a single, atmospheric moment, light on silk, garden air, the way your families gathered. It becomes part of your home and your daily life, quietly revealing more of itself each time you walk past it.

Why soft pastel? Will the painting last?

Fine soft pastel is essentially pure pigment, chosen for its luminosity and longevity. When properly framed and cared for, pastel can remain vibrant for centuries. Unlike some mediums that yellow or crack over time, the colours and strokes you see today are the ones future generations will see as well, which is why it is used for work intended as an heirloom.

What does the process look like, from inquiry to finished piece?

The process is intentionally unhurried and personal. After an initial inquiry, there is a conversation to understand your story, priorities, and event. Once a commission is confirmed, the next steps often include a collaboration with your planner and a series of quiet check‑ins as the vision evolves. On the wedding day, the live work unfolds in real time; afterwards, the painting is refined in the studio before being framed and delivered. Every stage is designed to feel calm, considered, and tailored to you.

How involved can we be in the creative direction?

You are invited into the heart of the vision and then gently protected from the noise. Clients are encouraged to share what matters most, including people, moments, symbols, spaces. From there, the composition, light, and painterly decisions are handled with experienced discretion. You will feel heard and understood, without being asked to art‑direct every brushstroke.

Do you work with our planner and creative team?

Yes. Collaborating closely with your planner, photographer, and floral or production team is an essential part of the process. The goal is for the painting to feel like a natural extension of the overall design and pacing of the day, and for the live art experience to enhance, never disrupt, the flow your team has so carefully crafted.

Where do you travel for events?

The studio is based in Washington, DC, with commissions regularly taking place across the United States and at destination weddings abroad. Travel logistics are handled with the same level of care as the artwork itself, so that the experience feels seamless for you and your team.

What should we expect in terms of investment?

Commissions are tailored to the scale, location, and complexity of your celebration, as well as any additional heirloom pieces you choose to add. Most couples invest at a level that reflects the painting’s role as a central, permanent piece in their home and family story. Detailed proposals are provided after an initial consultation, so you can see exactly what is included and how each element supports the final work.

What happens if something unexpected happens on the wedding day?

Weddings are living, breathing events, and unexpected moments are often where the most profound beauty appears. The process is built to be flexible: composition can adapt, timelines can breathe, and the focus can shift to whatever feels most true to your story. Calm, quiet responsiveness is part of the service you are commissioning.

How are framing and installation handled?

Framing is fully managed on your behalf in collaboration with APF Munn in New York, the master framers entrusted by leading museums and collectors. Your painting is designed, framed, and prepared for your space with the same level of care given to institutional works, with installation coordination available where appropriate so the piece arrives and is placed with ease.
